In the series "Details of Renaissance Paintings" Andy Warhol deals with the painting "Birth of Venus" by Sandro Botticelli. In the series of works, Warhol always shows only a central section of the painting. Here he puts focus on the head of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. With the well-known dreamy facial expression, Warhol elevated Venus to one of his icons à la Marylin Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. Through the accentuated choice of colors and the close-up depiction, Warhol creates a completely new value and transfers Venus into the present.
