Teilstück des prachtvollen Pflanzenwerkes mit den großformatigen Blumentafeln.
Erstes Teilstück eines der beeindruckensten Tafelwerke, die Jacquin (1727-1817) als Direktor der Kaiserlichen Gärten von Schloß Schönbrunn in Wien herausgab, und das einzige, für das er die Brüder Ferdinand und Franz Bauer als Kupferstecher gewinnen konnte. "Their plates .. are immediately recognizable for those qualities of detail and depth that distinguish their later work." (De Belder S. 193). - Ursprünglich sollte das Werk 8 Hefte à 25 Tafeln umfassen, jedoch bewog die Fülle der neu hinzugekommenen Pflanzen in den Gärten von Schloß Schönbrunn Jacquin dazu, einen zweiten und anschließend einen dritten Band zu veröffentlichen. Bei der vorliegenden Sammlung, die den Gesamttitel, Vorwort und Index über 100 Tafeln enthält, handelt es sich wohl um ein wie bei Junk, Rara S. 41 beschriebenes Exemplar: "So kommt es auch, daß das Werk manchmal unter Beifügung des mit dem 4. Hefte erschienenen später cassirten Gesammt-Titels und der Vorrede als in einem Bande mit 100 Tafeln als abgeschlossen angezeigt wurde."
EINBAND: Gefleckter Lederband der Zeit mit farb. Rückenschild und etw. Goldprägung sowie Goldschnitt. 48 : 30 cm. - ILLUSTRATION: Mit 100 kolor. Kupfertafeln (3 gefaltet). - KOLLATION: 2 Bll. Titel und Vorwort, 4 S. Tafelverzeichnis. - ZUSTAND: Ca. 18 Tafeln wegen des großen Formats im oberen oder seitl. Rand bis an die Platte beschnitten, ca. 3 Tafeln stellenw. mit leichtem Plattenton, ansonsten sehr sauber. Einband berieben und bestoßen, Rücken unten mit kl. Fehlstelle. - PROVENIENZ: Mit gest. Wappen-Exlibris der Earls of Ilchester ( 19. Jh.).

With 100 col. copperplates (3 folding) by Franz and Ferdinand Bauer, depicting various plants from the botanical gardens of Schönbrunn castle in Vienna. Contemp. mottled calf with label on spine, some gilt decoration and gilt edges. - Ca. 3 plates with slight staining, ca. 18 plates trimmed in upper or side margins due to the size, otherwise very clean and well-preserved. Binding bumped and scraped, with small defect to bottom of spine. - With 19th cent. engr. armorial bookplate of the earls of Ilchester.
