To Professor Friedrich Schütz, April 26, 1811. 1999.
Mixed media. Aluminum, metal, plastic, paint. Unique object.
Ca. 45 x 48.5 x 37 cm (17.7 x 19 x 14.5 in).
A picture in F.J. Verspohl's publication from 2001 shows the work without the green net structure, which was presumably added by the artist at a later point, as the fact that he often revised his works suggests. When the present owner acquired the work in 2002, it already featured the net structrure. [AR].
• Unique object from the Heinrich Kleist series.
• Color and form explode as Frank Stella conquers the third dimension with his wall sculptures.
• His works from the 1990s amaze with their complexity and the artist's vivid imagination.
• For the first time on the international auction market (source: artprice.com).
We are grateful to the Barbara Mathes Gallery, New York, for kindly providing us with information.
PROVENANCE: Private collection , North Germany (since 2002, Barbara Mathes Gallery, New York).
LITERATURE: F.J. Verspohl, Frank Stella: Heinrich von Kleist by Frank Stella. Catalogue raisonné Heinrich von Kleist series, Cologne 2001, plate XXVI, pp. 58f (illustrated in color, however, still without the green net structure).
