The genre painter Mari ten Kate knew to portray the adversities of everyday life with great attention to detail. His artistic work is primarily dedicated to the narrative genre, which he rendered in oil paintings and watercolors painting. Children play in a rural ambience and their funny and often highly emotional experience with all sorts of animals, siblings, mothers or hunters play the main role. He studied at the Imperial Academies at The Hague and in Amsterdam. Study trips to Paris, Italy and France followed. In 1883 and 1884 he visited the Indonesian island of Java. In 1852 the artist became a member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam. Works by Mari ten Kate are part of several Dutch collections, including the Reichsmuseum in Amsterdam, the Royal Collection or the Teylers Museum in Haarlem. [FS]
