The painting was made at a time when Heckendorf was intesively occupied with exotic themes. In 1925 he made eight watercolors for the book "Das Urwaldschiff. Ein Buch vom Amazonenstrom" by Richard Arnold Bermann (released in 1927), in which the author describes an adventurous journey on the Amazonas. [CB].
