It is undisputed that Hans Hartung counts among the most acclaimed European representatives of abstract painting. Through his consequent denial of an artistic description of the objects and the iconographic traditions he created a powerful and inimitable formal language over the course of his artistic career. Particularly famous for pictures characterized by calligraphic line formations, Hartung varied the relations between color field and line in manifold ways. Many his works appear to be spontaneously draft pictures, however, his paintings are the result of a well-devised pictorial composition. In our work from 1970 Hartung dissects the superimposed color layers in a swiftly executed chipping method for which he uses a variety of tools and thus creates a fascinating and complex composition determined by a bright and explosive color force.
