After studying at the Städelschule in Frankfurt and employment at an applied arts workshop together with his wife, Cristiani opened a studio of his own in Frankfurt, where he was chairmen of the Artists’ Association in 1931. The present watercolour dates from that period and is notable for a densely multifigural narrative component. Cristiani was indeed versatile. Apart from his work as an illustrator - for which his medium of choice was the woodcut - he published novels, short stories and verses he illustrated himself. The Cristianis usually encountered on the art market are paintings and watercolours. [HL]
