Gondelherde. 1958.
In good condition. With small traces of oxidation, insignificantly rubbed in places.
Bronze with black patina, green oxidised.
Clarenbach 179. Signed and dated on third gondula from right. Unique piece. 17,3 : 51,4 cm (6,8 : 20,2 in). Koenig depicted the motif of flocked gondolas several times, similar to the motif of the herd of Camargue cattle from 1957. But in this painting of Venetian gondolas Koenig ingeniously visualises the element of the water carrying the fleet of gondolas as if they were floating. The fragile bars between the gondolas, serving as platforms, remind of the oak poles that Venice's palaces rest on. The situatuion's uniqueness, in terms of its fragility, has been depicted in an artistically unmatched way regarding its delicate manner and mature, perfet form. [KD]
