Next to Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Erich Heckel and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Fritz Bleyl is certainly the least known name associated with the founding of the artist group “Brücke”. The artist, born in Zwickau in 1880, initially studied architecture in Dresden from 1901 and in the years that followed met the three artists he would official found the "Brücke" with in 1905.

The sheet offered here comes from the significant first year of their artistic collaboration. It gives an impressive account of the effort to quickly and spontaneously capture visual impressions in drawings – the main ambition of the artists, especially in the early days of the "Brücke". Against this background, the "quarter-hour nudes" were created, about which Bleyl reports in his memoirs: "Once a week we met regularly, first at Kirchner's. The wish to draw the live model was realized and immediately carried out, not in conventional academic manner, but as a 'quarter-hour act'" (Fritz Bleyl, Erinnerungen, quoted from: Hans Wentzel, Fritz Bleyl. Gründungsmitglied der "Brücke", in: Kunst in Hessen und am Mittelrhein 8 [1968], p. 96). The artists then often used the resulting drawings as templates for their prints - sheets by Fritz Bleyl, Kirchner and Heckel document the implementation of the "quarter-hour nudes" in the medium of the woodcut.

In our case, the portrayed person is Isabella, who was particularly valued as a model. In addition to Bleyl, she also sat for Kirchner, Heckel and Hermann Max Pechstein, who meanwhile had joined the "Brücke". In this work the artist shows her as a "standing quarter-hour nude" in full length and presents her with a particularly appealing execution of contour and shadow. The spontaneous, but at the same time virtuoso hatching gives her a graceful and intense presence.

From today's perspective, Bleyl's nude drawings occupy a special position in the context of this famous series of works: while most of the drawings by the other "Brücke" members are no longer preserved, some of Bleyl's subtle depictions still bear witness to the special "work frenzy" of the artists (Fritz Bleyl, Erinnerungen, p. 96), as well as of the significant early period of the artist group "Brücke", which was so decisive for German Expressionism.
