Quai in Hamburg / Meereswellen. 1900/1902.
Watercolor.
Signed in lower right. On firm paper. 29.5 x 36.6 cm (11.6 x 14.4 in), almost the full sheet.
Verso with a very atmospheric and fully executed depiction of two wave crests with spray, the full sheet, which might have been made on the Dutch coast around 1900. The depiction on recto, however, was presumably executed around 1902 and probably shows the inner harbor of Teufelsbrück near Hamburg on the river Elbe. Liebermann stayed at the local hotel Louis C. Jacob in summer 1902 to paint and draw several "Bilder aus Hamburg" (Hamburg pictures) on behalf of the Kunsthalle Hamburg. [CH].
• Painted on both sides.
• The front "Quai in Hamburg" was presumably made at the same place and time as Liebermann's famous painting "Terrasse im Restaurant Jacob in Nienstedten an der Elbe" (1902, Hamburger Kunsthalle).
• Atmospheric pictorial account by one of the most celebrated German impressionists
.

This work's authenticity has kindly been confirmed orally by Drs. Margreet Nouwen, Berlin. The work will be included into the forthcoming catalog raisonné of works on paper.

PROVENANCE: Collection Peter Kölln, Elmshorn.
Private collection Northern Germany (inherited from aforementioned).
