The lush garden of flowers that Emil Nolde set up with his wife in Seebüll is both source of inspiration and retreat. Comparable with the famous garden in Giverny, which Claude Monet laid out in a former wasteland, Nolde build a blooming refuge. Most of his watercolors originating from those days have a direct connection to the garden in Seebüll. Nolde sees the flower not as a plant, he is only fascinated by the blossom which he renders onto the moist Japon in intensive colors. Botanic accuracy is omitted when the composition asks for it. Nolde draws a secret from the blossoms, and returns it with increased expressiveness.
