Marcks on and of depicted cranes in his works. In 1932 he made two small crane figures in 1937 a gypsum model and drawings for a (unexecuted) crane fountain. Marcks modelled the squatting crane for the first time in 1942, in an even more naturalistic manner than this one from 1954. [CB].
