Emil Nolde
This watercolor “Bergfrühling“ is a document from a relatively unknown side of the artists: His fascination for Switzerland and its impressive mountain landscape. Works from Nolde‘s days in St. Gallen and Davos are very rare on the art market, which makes this work a very special gem. As member of the Swiss Alpine Club SAC, Nolde explored the mountains on many climbing tours and conquered several four-thousanders. The artist rendered his impressions of the Alpine world in expressive watercolors even years later, just as it is the case with the spring scene in this paper work from around 1930. Similar to his coast- and seascapes, Nolde once more succeeds in capturing the forces of nature in very intensive colors: a bright orange tree stands in strong contrast to the lucent purple mountain chain that occupies two-thirds of the sheet.
